Itinerary Day by Day

On arrival at the Lao border checkpoint at Houeixai pier, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check in. Today you are free at your leisure to explore this town, visiting the local market and villages nearby. The surrounding areas of Houeixai, the capital of Bokeo province are home to 34 ethnic minority groups, the second most ethnically diverse province in Laos. Overnight in Houeixai.

Early morning leave the town for a comfortable and smooth drive to Luang Nam Tha, a town on the banks of the Nam Tha River features rugged mountains and beautiful tropical forests and shares its border with China and Myanmar. En route, we visit hill tribe villages at Muang Phouka and other surrounding area. Upon arrival in Luang Nam Tha, we continue our drive to Muang Sing with a stopover at a Lantern minority village.

Start at 9:00 AM, travel by Tuk Tuk to visit Tai Lue village “Ban Don Chai”, Tai Lue temple “The Tai Lue traditional style temple”, 40 minute walk to Akha village “Ban Pha Kha”, an hour walking through agricultural field visit Ban Sai Leck, Ban Jong Ka and Ban Nam Mai they are Yao ethnic groups to see how to making their traditional clothes, lunch provided on the trail. And 15 minute walk to visit other Akha village “Ban Nam Daet Mai”.

With the village visits above, you will explore the various traditions, cultures and lifestyles, interact with local villagers and first-hand experience from the Yao themselves the Yao culture & way of life. Return the Muang Sing town by Tuk Tuk. From there, we will drive back to Luang Nam Tha for the overnight stay.

The local market also attracts numerous ethnic minorities who converge from the surrounding mountainsides or valley to barter and trade their goods. We visit this congregation before setting off on our journey along the south to Pakbeng via Oudomxay. Oudomxay province is residence to a mixture of 23 ethnic minority groups. We make a few rest stops along the way, which gives you the opportunity to see the ethnic minority groups of Hmong, Khmu, Black Thai and Lu; Hmong hilltribe people. On arrival at Oudomxay city, we head out the town to Pakbeng, along the way; we visit some more Khmu, Tai Dam (Black Thai), and Hmong villages. Once we arrive at Pakbeng, we browse the daily evening hill tribe market before checking in to your hotel.

The day starts with a transfer to Mekong Elephant Camp where you will have a watch on the elephant bath in the morning. After that the 45 minute elephant ride starts off with a ride down a river bed surrounded by bamboo foliage. Along the way, it is your chance to open your view on the picturesque countryside. Trekking to the top of the hill also offer you a glimpse of the Mekong in the valley below. The elephants will pass by a local H’Mong village, where you can stop to take a look on the local daily life. We then return to Elephant Camp. The lunch will be served at local restaurant.

In the afternoon, we will take an orientation walk into the small town of Pakbeng, and visit the central market. You may stop to enjoy the cold drink at a small bar in the city center. Dinner will be served at the hotel.

A continental breakfast is served at terrace from 7a.m. The boat leaves Pakbeng at 8a.m. for the day trip to Kamu Lodge and the first stop is at Ban Baw to observe the processing of the traditional rice alcohol. Then, the boat arrives at Kamu Lodge around 2p.m. so you will be able to check in and participate in different activities; visiting Kamu village, archery contest, rice planting and harvesting, traditional fishing and gold panning (January to June). A set menu dinner is served at the opened air restaurant and you stay an overnight at Kamu Lodge.

You are free to troll around the lodge or the local Khmu villages. After lunch, we will continue the cruise downstream to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Luang Prabang. We take a visit to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. If time permits, we will also stop to visit Ban Xang Hai, which is famous for making Lao whisky, lao lau; or Ban Xang Khong, which is famous for its traditional hand-weaving. Arrive in Luang Prabang in the late afternoon, transfer to your hotel for check in. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

After breakfast, start the city tour begins with Royal Palace Museum, which hosts a range of interesting artifacts.  Our next stop is the magnificent Wat Xiengthong with its roofs sweeping low to the ground, which represents classical Laotian architecture. Laos is also known for its traditional crafts, and today you will visit local villages of Lao ethnic minority groups at Ban Ouay, a Hmong village, Ban Ou a Laoloum village and Ban Thapene, a Khmu village.  Then proceed to the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfall where you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the pools or walk along the forest trails.

On the way back to Luang Prabang, we stop to visit the nearby Kuang Si Falls Butterfly Park, one of the must-visit spots newly opened on January 2014. Back to Luang Prabang, we ascend the 329 steps to the top of Phousi Hill for a beautiful sunrise view of the city and the Mekong River.

In the morning, we travel by road south to Vang Vieng. Our intrepid journey will be strenuous as we drive along one of the most scenic, but also a road that is pot holed in places.  Along the way, we will make some stop to visit local villages of H’Mong ethnic groups. We will stop over at to enjoy the panoramic view over the region at the peak of Sala Phoukhoun, the highest peak of the northern Laos. Our next photo stop is Phatang Mountain view point to admire the beautiful scenery before reaching Vang Vieng. Check in your hotel to take some rest.

In the morning, we will drive to the town of Hin Heup. Here we will meet others at the 'Kayaking Meeting Point' sign board situated at a local shop. The today kayaking trip begins at the point where Route 13 crosses the Nam Lik River over an old iron bridge.

Start with some basic instructions and practice before our experienced guide escorts you downstream through the first section of rapids! (Grade 1-2, suitable for beginners) We continue onwards until stop for a delicious Lao style picnic lunch served on banana leaves! After lunch, you are free for resting or swimming in the river.

In the afternoon, continue paddling in the calm waters and observe local fishermen cast their nets for fish. End up in a stunning steep gorge which provides perfect platforms for exhilarating cliff jumping into the cool water below. Finish the day at an ethnic Tai Dam Village of ‘Ban Vang Mon’ in the dry season or at the ethnic Lao Loum Village of ‘Ban That’ in the wet season. From here, we will meet our driver again and transfer directly to Vientiane.

After breakfast, visit Talad Khuadin (Khuadin market) where various goods are displayed for sale; including fresh food, household goods, souvenirs, textiles, gold, silver and antiques. Then proceed to Phou Khao Khouay Park, one of Laos’ most beautiful nature reserves 40 kilometers northeast of Vientiane. Arrive in the park; you can join various activities such as trekking, boating (in rainy season), picnicking, swimming, discovery of orchids. End the tour at around 3:00 pm then transfer back to Vientiane.

Morning, our driver will pick you up at hotel then travel south along route 13.  En route we stop at Prabaht Ponsan, an Ancientstupa dating back to the 15th Century.  It is also home to the Ancient Buddha footprint, discovered in 1933, and now an important religious site in Laos. Following lunch we continue onwards into Khammoune province and the mountainous area, where a stop at a view point near Khoun Kham offers a breathtaking view over the surrounding area. Arrive in Ban Naphouak, where we board a local boat on the Hin Boun River.  The journey upstream takes us past some stunning limestone karst scenery, as well as a number of villages with lovely children.  Late afternoon, reach your accommodation in Sala Hin Boun for the overnight stay.

After breakfast at Sala Hin Boun we continue by boat upriver to explore Kong Lor village before boarding a smaller boat into the famous Kong Lor Cave, a nearly eight kilometer long cave with a river running through it. After lunch in a remote village on the other side of the cave, we return to Sala Hin Boun before continue our drive further south to Thakhek.

In the morning, we will explore the Buddha Caves, which was discovered in June 2004 by a local farmer who found the caves of more than 200 Buddha statues by accident when following the group of bats entering the caves. It is now one of the must-sees when you visit Thakhek and the center of Laos. Continuing the drive to the south, we will arrive in Pakse at mid-afternoon. Upon arrival, we head east to the famous Bolaven Plateau. We stopover at the beautiful Tad Fan Waterfalls, and check in the Tad Fan Resort for the overnight stay.

Tad Fan waterfall is spectacular with twin waterfalls plummeting into a deep gorge surrounded by flourishing vegetation. In the morning, you will start trekking through villages, coffee plantations, and a suspension bridge. Huge rocks and epiphytic orchids abound all along the way. Tall pine trees grow here, giving a typical character of the landscape. In the afternoon we will make a tour around Bolaven Plateau to visit Tad Lo, home to another scenic waterfall and numerous ethnic minority groups; the villages of Alak, Nge, and Katu. We then drive to the province of Champasak for the overnight stay.

In the morning we start visiting the province of Champasak, our base for exploring the ruins of Wat Phu, one of Southeast Asia's most dramatically situated temples. We have time to explore these intriguing Khmer ruins, which are perched at the base of Mount Phu Kao. Wat Phu is one of the Lao World Heritage sites recognized by UNESCO in 2001, this wonderful archeological site of Khmer civilization dates back to the 9th century, predating the famous Angkor Wat in Cambodia. A festival of this site is held annually during the full moon in February and attracts numerous pilgrims from all over southern Laos. We then drive further south to Don Khong, in the South Mekong river region known as the 4000 islands, one of the most scenic areas in Laos.

Morning, we embark on a long tail boat for discovering the widest reach of the Mekong River, where during the dry season the waters recede and leave behind thousands of islets, giving this area a lovely name” Si Phan Done”. We explore the local peaceful village of Ban Khone, where you will see an array of relics from the French colonial era and retrace the old colonial past, including old French colonial buildings and the remnants of the first Lao railway with its locomotive. We continue to discover the 4000 islands area by tuktuk and visit the marvelous Liphi waterfall, also called the "Corridor of the Devil" one of the most beautiful waterfalls marking Lao border with Cambodia. If we are lucky, we may even see the rare freshwater Irrawaddy Mekong dolphin at Ban Hang Khone.

After breakfast, we return to the mainland at the fishing village of Ban Nakasang and drive further south to visit Khone Phapheng which is considered the largest waterfall by volume in South East Asia. This is a really impressive fall near the Lao-Cambodian border, set within an area which is teeming with wildlife, making this area one of the most breathtaking destinations in Laos. Afterwards we drive back to Pakse. The rest of the day is your own free time at leisure.
